It is true that the average family can save up to £700 a year using their Freezer to help reduce food waste.
Every year families in the UK throw away 7 million tonnes of food and drink. A massve thirteen billion pounds worth of food waste.
It is a common misconception that you can only freeze food on the day of purchase. The reality is you can freeze food up to the use by date. Freezers can store food for years but ideally you should use the frozen food within six months. You may find a greyish-brown dried out patch on some foods when defrosted. This is called ‘freezer burn’ and does not pose a health risk. Just trim the affected areas before use.
Foods suitable for freezing include bread, cheese (not soft cheese), cooked meat, fish, fruit, milk and potatoes.
If you have too much fresh food, put the leftovers in the freezer. Save yourself money and at the same time help the enviroment. Wasting less food would have the same effect on the planet as taking 1 in 4 cars off the road!
Tips on saving food:

Cut large fruits like apples and pears into slices or chunks. Freeze spread out on freezer or parchment paper. When frozen place in freezer bags and keep in the freezer.

Cook a big batch of rice, spread it on a cookie sheet or parchment paper and freeze. When the rice is frozen, just put in a freezer bag or ontainer.

Make up a few batches of pancakes or waffles for quick “defrost and go” breakfasts during the week. Freeze on a cookie sheet, then toss them in a freezer bag. Reheat in the microwave, toaster, or toaster oven.

Milk
Freeze milk as soon as possible after buying. To use frozen milk, let thaw, and then shake well before opening. This makes sure any solids are remixed.

Pasta
Cook the whole package and freeze any leftovers. Freeze individual size portions in a freezer bag, making sure to squeeze out the air and get the bag as flat as possible. Reheat by running hot water over the bag for a few minutes!

Mashed Potatoes
Using an ice cream scoop or spoon, put even portions of mashed potatoes onto parchment-lined cookie sheet. Freeze until hard then transfer into a freezer bag. These will keep in the freezer for at least 2 months.
